Review: Earth Balance Mindful Mayo

There are some things in life that you miss when you have to give them up, especially when a good substitute just ISN’T possible.  Or, when you simply can’t ‘cheat’ once in awhile and try even a little.  The natural inclination is to truly miss what you can’t have.  But that’s life, right?

For me, eggs fall into that category since they’re one food that I absolutely can’t ‘cheat’ on or just try periodically in their whole form.  I’ve found that I can have them if they’re mixed into something like gluten-free bread or a gluten-free cake, but not if it’s one of the main ingredients.  Whole eggs are off the table and that sadly has also included mayo.  Three and a half years, no whole eggs.

Then a few weeks ago, someone suggested that I try a vegan variety of mayo that’s made primarily with soy.  For a moment I considered it even though I’m not a big fan of fake soy foods.  On my next visit to the grocery store, I came across Earth Balance’s new Mindful Mayo made with Olive Oil.  Plainly on the label it states: Gluten Free, Soy Free, Egg Free, Dairy Free and Preservative Free.  I squealed with delight and people turned to stare!  I didn’t care because I felt like I had stumbled upon a mini-triumph in my food life.

The first little scoop tasted like heaven to me.  A good match for my memory of mayonnaise, Earth Balance’s Mindful Mayo felt like I was able to finally enjoy a part of life that I’d been missing.  For the first time in three and a half years, mayo is now back on the table with ingredients that don’t bother my system and are actually decent for a vegan version of a traditional condiment favorite.

Next, I asked my husband (who can eat eggs and mayo, for that matter) to give it a try.  This is one of those instances that I really can’t compare a product to a ‘normal’ option that I used to eat.  He was pleasantly surprised at the similar consistency and taste stating that it was an 85% on the mark for traditional egg mayo.  AND if I had made him a sandwich using Mindful Mayo without telling him, he’d never of guessed that it wasn’t egg mayonnaise.

This is honestly one product that I’ve totally flipped over and have personally thanked reps from Earth Balance for this product when I visited their booth at Natural Foods Expo East a couple of weeks ago.  Mindful Mayo made from Olive Oil has changed my ability to enjoy an old favorite without tons of junk and soy!
