Bad news, folks…
Yes, rice (a staple of a gluten-free diet) contains arsenic.
And what’s worse?
We now know that the arsenic damages genetic material in YOUR body.
A new study has found that elevated arsenic levels in rice can produce detectable damage at a cellular level. That the levels of arsenic detectable in urine from people eating rice is much higher than those avoiding it altogether.
I don’t know about you, but I’d like to keep my genetic material as unaltered as possible because mutations can cause all sorts of problems. Plus you’d have to wonder the potential issues that could arise from passing on genetic material to your kids that’s affected by this.
This is bad news folks… here’s the deal:

Leave a comment below whether you’ll continue to eat rice and risk damaging your DNA!
I don’t know what I’m going to do. I knew there was some arsenic in rice, but never knew such a small amount could damage your DNA. I’m in shock….devastated. I don’t eat too much bread, so I put everything on Lundberg rice cakes. A product I always felt so safe with, & I know they grow their own rice & have a dedicated facility. I am so sad about this. I have no idea what to do 🙁
I’m a HUGE rice fan but have drastically cut my rice consumption over the past few months for this reason. I do still eat rice but I eat Thai and Basmati as it’s shown to have a lot less arsenic in it that most rice grown in the US. I also rinse it 5 or 6 times before cooking it and again one cooked, before eating it. For people who can’t live without their rice, like myself, this is one suggestion. 😀
and water? I drink water with arsenic loss because it’s very much problem. I don’t eat rice.
Quick inform all of the countries around the world who eat rice as a staple! Our world population should drop to less than half if we’re ALL killing ourselves with arsenic poisoning from rice! PpppBbbThhhhh 😛 Moderation is key to consumption of any food. I strongly dislike scare-tactic reporting about food! Having a limited amount of foods I can eat safely without making me “immediately” ill is hard and expensive enough! I will continue to keep rice in my very limited diet of foods, thank you!
I have essentially stopped eating any grains since discovering that I have a significant gluten intolerance bordering with chronic Dermatitis Herpetiformis as the least of my symptoms. I occasionally eat white rice. Based on the research included in your post and previous studies, I will eat fewer servings per month now and at home. I will not offer it in any form to my grandchildren or my husband. I will rinse and cook with more water that can be drained as advised. I have already abandoned gluten-free products as unhealthy and this just provides another reason to avoid them.
I so appreciate you work and Thank you for these efforts on our behalf.
